September 2 marked the start of boys and girls cross country here at the high school. Preseason rankings list the varsity boys in a number two spot, just behind Glenwood. Although the girls team was not in the newest rankings, Coach Trent Edsen has told his team multiple times that with their ever-present hard work, perseverance, and good attitudes they could make their first ever team appearance in this fall’s state title meet in Fort Dodge.

With the temperature hovering in the mid-60s, and partially cloudy skies above, the Little Cyclone Invitational could not have been a better way to start off the season. All six scheduled races went off in flawless timing, starting with Freshmen/Sophomore girls at 4:30 and ending the night with varsity boys at around 6:20 that evening. The junior varsity girls started off the night with a slim, cool 45 second spread between their scoring runners. Freshmen Mallory Hunter led the pack with an 18:55 finish, helping the team to a sixth place finish.

Typically, for a coach, the varsity races hold some of the most highly anticipated times of the night, but as soon as the JV boys race went off, that idea had already been nixed. Freshmen, and first time cross country athlete, Joel Bauman crossed the line in an impressive 18:45, followed by three more teammates under the 20 minute mark; Sophomore Will Hamilton at 19:05, Senior Nathan Ford at 19:05, and Sophomore Luc Moisan finishing at 19:45. The great show of force helped the boys to a hard fought sixth place in a predominately class 4-A meet, but more impressively would later secure Bauman, Hamilton, and Ford spots to run in the varsity race at their upcoming home meet.

Senior Nora Tjossem (16: 26) and Junior Nathan Carr (17:35) led their respective varsity teams to an 8th and 9th place finish on the tough ISU Course in Ames.

Grinnell High School Staff members have come to the conclusion that the girls shorts are at unacceptable lengths. They are now making the move to change the dress code in the school. However, students seem to think they are not doing it the right way. The staff are tending to single out young ladies throughout the school and telling them that they need to change into different clothes. By doing this the staff is simply embarrassing the student and leaving them wondering if that staff member has something against them or if they were perhaps the only student that has been told that. Girls around the school want to question the staffs doings but how can they when they have no option but to do what they have been told. Megan Schmidt a Senior at GHS believes that some shorts are to short and others are okay to wear. However, it seems almost every girls shorts are a problem to the staff. If they are going to enforce this rule, they should do it throughout the whole school not just people they see throughout their day.

This year the school administration decided to add Seminar groups to the agenda. The purpose for the groups is to meet twice a month (every other wednesday) and get to know your fellow students better. The Seminar leaders arrange for a variety of ice-breakers and activities for us to participate in to grow together as a group. There are also contests with the other seminar groups. For instance, the seminar group with the highest gpa combined wins a pizza party. I have a feeling this year, we’ll be a much closer school through the seminars.
